The importance of standards

I’ve always enjoyed photography. Not so long ago, my camera used 35mm film. When I’d taken 36 photographs, I would take the film to Boots and pay for every photograph to be developed and printed. When I collected the prints the next day I was often disappointed to discover that I had paid good money to print photographs that were out-of-focus, too dark, too bright or just badly framed.

Today, like most people, I use a digital camera. Photographs are stored on a standard memory card. I can view these photographs on the camera’s LCD display and delete any that are not up to scratch. My camera has a standard wireless interface, so I can quickly and easily upload pictures to my Facebook account, my digital photo frame or send them to my printer. I can remove the memory card, insert into my Mac and use any one of a number of software applications to edit and catalogue my pictures.
